About the Course

When companies promote individual contributors (ICs) to managerial positions, they often consider their technical skills, communication abilities, and teamwork, among other attributes. However, excelling as an individual contributor doesn't guarantee success as a manager. Transitioning from an IC to a manager is a significant shift for most individuals. Some thrive in their new role, while others find it challenging. Supporting and guiding first time managers is crucial to their success in leading teams effectively.

Becoming a manager for the first time requires a mindset shift for almost everyone. It means stepping back from day-to-day tasks to focus on the bigger picture, dealing with ambiguity, and handling intangible aspects of the job. They must learn to delegate tasks, be accountable for their team's work, set priorities, balance workloads, and build trust with their team and peers. They also need to provide effective feedback, motivate their team, handle difficult conversations, manage performance issues, make decisions about raises and promotions. Some first time managers may find themselves managing former peers who are now their direct reports, a situation that many find to be challenging.

While some first-time managers receive proper training and coaching before taking on their roles, many don't get that opportunity due to budget constraints or time limitations. Some leaders may not realize the challenges that first-time managers face. Some leaders expect new managers to dive in right away to solve existing problems and deal with difficult situations without providing the essential tools and support. This can overwhelm new managers and hinder their ability to effectively lead their teams, which, in turn, impacts the effectiveness of their teams.
